The office of Justice, peace and integrity of creation Franciscans Africa from 17 th to 20 th
November 2023 organized a training to develop a unique Laudato Si’ clubs curriculum that will
be used to establish Laudato Si’ clubs in schools and train the clubs. It has been a long time
dream to ensure environmental clubs in schools are equipped with the right knowledge on social
and ecological justice before they finish their studies or before they join institutions of higher
learning.

To achieve this goal the JPIC-Franciscans Africa office invited partners and volunteers to
brainstorm and develop a curriculum together and establish a team that will help train more than
10 schools Laudato Si’ clubs from January 2024 with a aim of training form 3 ,4 and the
environmental students from form 1 and 2.

The training had 18 people from different partners and institutions such as the office of Justice,
Peace and integrity of creation (JPIC-FA) Laudato Si Movement, 350 dot org, Harmony institute,
Catholic university –Center for social justice and ethics, Mount Kenya University, Mercy
education Schools, Young Franciscans (You Fra), Religious brothers and Sisters from Little
Sisters of St. Joseph (LSSJ), Queen of Love and OFM.

The Curriculum that was developed focused on Movement building, Social and ecological
justice advocacy, Food security and human rights and the key topics that will constitute the
curriculum are.
- Fossil fuels –Impacts on youths and Communities
- Movement building
- Human trafficking and human rights
- Agro-Ecology and Food security
- Scriptural Reasoning
- Talent Creativity and Innovation
- Renewable energy and Sustainable communities
- Social Media and Journalism like Storytelling and Indigenous knowledge
- Public participation , Lobbying and Advocacy (Policy change, Use of local media and
Leaders of integrity)
The Laudato Si’ clubs will be established in the following schools which have been
championing for social justice and environment care over the past years and they are the Mercy
education office schools which are St. Michael, Our Lady of Mercy South B, St. Anne’s,
Huruma girls, Ngarariga other partner schools are Mama Africa, Light Academy, Precious blood,
Starehe Boys and St. Ronan.

Since renewable energy will be one key topic for the Laudato Si’ clubs curriculum some of the
curriculum development team visited Ngong Hills wind mills power plant to advocate for the
need to encourage the use of renewable energy since Africa has a great renewable energy
potential.
